- Sunday’s event is now a Duathlon due to extreme levels of bacteria caused by the amount of rain Canberra has had. It is very disappointing that the weather now plays havoc on the sport we love – see updated maps for the run below. WQE points are still available as if it was a triathlon.
- Keen to volunteer at the JFMT – Triathlon ACT (ivolunteer.com)
- Technical Officials have advised that it maybe a compulsory wetsuit swim on race day so please make sure you bring your wetsuit if not you may wish to borrow one to be able to race

Drafting Education
Look at it this way, if wetsuits are optional, so is drafting. Check out how you can still benefit from drafting from being on someones rear wheel from a safe distance of up to 7-10m from the rider in front. Anyone can do it.

Misconception regarding age group draft legal racing
What the above image is trying to say is this. Just because you are racing in a draft legal (DL) triathlon doesn’t mean you have to draft (ride directly behind) another competitor. You can still ride under 10m behind the person in front and still be drafting at a safe distance. Even if you reduce the gap it is still drafting which is okay. The closer you are the bigger the advantage but do so ONLY if you feel safe to do so.
Drafting is like wearing a wetsuit in the triathlon swim leg, If you choose to wear a wetsuit you will get an advantage. If you choose to draft off the rider in front you get an advantage. When they say wetsuit optional it is the same as a draft legal triathlon. You don’t have to wear a wetsuit and you don’t have to draft.
In other words there is no reason not to register for a triathlon race just because it says Draft Legal (DL). No athlete should be intimidated because an age group triathlon is draft legal. Participants who decide to draft MUST ensure they have the experience to do so for their own safety and the safety of others around them. If you feel uncomfortable around other riders then stay away from other riders, pass on the right and enjoy your race.
If you race a non-draft legal triathlon you have to be 10m behind the rider in front. In a draft legal triathlon it doesn’t matter. It is all about being safe.
Looking forward to seeing a big field for the Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon.
